Our Story
How Right Fit Rescue began—and why “right fit” became our standard.
Right Fit Rescue began in March 2022. Before starting Right Fit Rescue, our founder had spent a couple of years fostering for another rescue. At the time, helping animals was simply something that sounded fun and rewarding. None of us could have imagined how much that decision would grow into or how many lives would eventually be touched by Right Fit Rescue.
The Beginning
In our first year, we focused on helping mama dogs and their puppies. What started small quickly grew, and that first year we helped more than 100 mamas and puppies get the care and second chances they deserved.
As we continued to grow, so did our understanding of the needs in our community.
Growing to Meet the Need
Rushed placements lead to returns
When animals are placed before they’re ready—or before a home truly understands their needs—stress increases and outcomes suffer. Speed alone doesn’t create stability.
Animals need decompression in real homes
Shelter environments can mask personality and amplify fear. Without time in a calm home, it’s impossible to see who an animal really is or what they need to succeed.
Fosters need support—not pressure
Caregivers do their best work when they’re guided, heard, and supported. Without that foundation, even well-matched placements can fall apart.
In 2024, we joined forces with a local kitty rescuer and began expanding our work to help cats and kittens. We also began taking on TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) projects, recognizing that helping individual animals wasn’t enough. We needed to address the root of the problem—animal overpopulation.
Turning Points
More Than Finding a Home
Today, Right Fit Rescue is about so much more than finding the right home for an animal. We believe in giving our community resources, education, support, and solutions. We work to help families keep their pets whenever possible, provide access to affordable veterinary and spay/neuter resources, assist with TNR, and step in when animals have nowhere else to turn.
Turning Point: Foster-First
We realized animals struggled most when placed without time to settle.
So we changed our approach to prioritize foster homes over long-term sheltering.
And it led to calmer animals, clearer insight into needs, and more thoughtful matches.
Turning Point: Stronger Matching
We realized good intentions weren’t enough to guarantee lasting placements.
So we changed how we evaluate readiness and compatibility during the adoption process.
And it led to fewer mismatches and greater confidence for adopters and fosters alike.
Turning Point: Recovery Support
We realized medical and behavioral recovery requires consistent support, not quick fixes.
So we changed how we provide guidance, resources, and follow-up during recovery.
And it led to stronger progress and better long-term outcomes for animals who needed extra care.
Turning Point: What “Right Fit” Really Means
We realized “right fit” isn’t a moment—it’s a process.
So we changed how we think about timing, readiness, and partnership.
And it led to placements built on patience, clarity, and trust.
What We Believe Because of What We’ve Seen
“Time changes outcomes.”
When animals are given space to decompress, recover, and feel safe, everything shifts—from behavior to confidence to the ability to connect.
Home is the best medicine.
We’ve watched fearful animals soften in quiet routines, and medical cases improve with consistency and comfort. A home environment reveals who an animal really is—beyond stress responses and survival mode.
The right match is worth waiting for.
We’ve learned that a rushed “yes” can lead to heartbreak, while a thoughtful match builds stability. Waiting isn’t delay—it’s care. It’s how we protect animals and the people who open their homes to them.
Support changes what’s possible.
Fosters do incredible work, but they shouldn’t have to do it alone. When caregivers have guidance, resources, and communication, animals do better—and people stay in the work long enough to change more lives.
Our village has continued to grow and expand, and so has our impact. By 2026, Right Fit Rescue had helped more than 400 animals. What began as something that simply sounded fun has grown into a community of fosters, volunteers, rescuers, supporters, and families who believe that it truly takes a village. And we’re just getting started.
The People Behind It
We’re a foster-based network of people who care deeply about doing this work the right way. Right Fit Rescue is made possible by fosters who open their homes, volunteers who show up consistently, adopters who value thoughtful matches, and donors who support care that prioritizes long-term outcomes.
Together, this community creates the stability, patience, and support animals need to succeed. Every role matters, and every success story reflects the collective effort behind it.
Today: Where We Are Now
What We Do Today
Right Fit Rescue focuses on foster-based care that gives animals time to recover, decompress, and prepare for adoption. Our work centers on placing animals into supportive homes, providing guidance through medical and behavioral recovery, and making thoughtful adoption decisions based on readiness and fit.
We coordinate foster placements, support caregivers throughout the process, and work closely with adopters to ensure each transition is set up for long-term success.
What We’re Building Toward
We’re continuing to grow in ways that strengthen outcomes, not just capacity. That includes expanding our foster network, improving the resources and support available to caregivers, and refining how we match animals with homes.
As we move forward, our goal remains the same: to build a rescue model that is sustainable, supportive, and grounded in care—one that allows every animal the time and stability they need to succeed.
